From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. The Caribbean is a region consisting of the Caribbean Sea, its islands (most of which enclose the sea), and the surrounding coasts. The region is located southeast of the Gulf of Mexico and Northern America, east of Central America, and to the north of South America. Situated largely on the Caribbean Plate, the region comprises more than 7,000 islands, islets, reefs, and cays. These islands, called the West Indies, generally form island arcs that delineate the eastern and northern edges of the Caribbean Sea. These islands are called the West Indies because when Christopher Columbus landed here in 1492 he believed that he had reached the Indies (in Asia). The region consists of the Antilles, divided into the larger Greater Antilles which bound the sea on the north and the Lesser Antilles on the south and east (including the Leeward Antilles), and the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands, which are in fact in the Atlantic Ocean north of Cuba, not in the Caribbean Sea. Geo-politically, the West Indies are usually reckoned as a sub-region of North America and are organized into 27 territories including sovereign states, overseas departments, and dependencies. At one time, there was a short-lived country called the Federation of the West Indies composed of ten English-speaking Caribbean territories, all of which were then UK dependencies. The region takes its name from that of the Carib, an ethnic group present in the Lesser Antilles and parts of adjacent South America at the time of European contact. In the English-speaking world, someone from the Caribbean is usually referred to as a "West Indian," although the phrase "Caribbean person" is sometimes used. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License What should I do on my Western Caribbean cruise? Q. I am going on a Western Caribbean cruise in January. I want to know opinions on best shore excursions, where should I just plan on hanging on the beach, and where the best animal and marine life are. Also, can I expect to see any marine life (dolphins, etc.) as I cruise that area? In January, the average high temps at my destinations are in the high 70's to low 80's. The ports of call are: Grand Cayman, Roatan, Honduras, Cozumel, Mexico Princess Cays, Bahamas Suggestions? Asked by Amy D - Wed Sep 30 17:19:46 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Your library or bookstore will have guidebooks for Caribbean ports of call. Or the on-line guidebooks will have info on that. A great source is CruiseCritic.com. Click on "Boards" and go to "Ports of Call" for info from experienced cruisers. Cayman and Coz are both easy to do on your own. Cayman is a tendered port, so you'll need to allow extra time for the 15-20-minute tender to/from the ship. You MUST be sure to allow time to get back to the ship ON TIME because they will not wait for you if you're late unless you're on one of their excursions. Make sure you take the essentials for that situation [passport, money/credit card, name of ship's agent on shore]. In Cayman, "the" thing to do is to swim with the stingrays. Q. I don't understand how the first Pirates of The Caribbean connected/led into the 2nd and 3rd movie. Like how did they have anything to do with the plot of the first movie? Did I miss something? Asked by Alexis - Mon Oct 5 01:53:37 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. No you didn't miss anything its hard to get the concept the first couple times u watch it. how they connected the 1st and 2nd movies was thru the black pearl. How Captain Jack Sparrow was claiming to be captain of it even though he wasnt it was the captain for 11 of the 13 years. If he wouldn't have been claiming to be the captain of the pearl the story line would have been messed up. I dont think they were planning on making the 2nd and 3rd movie at first. but it worked out in the end. nxt time you watch put subtitles on the 2nd movie in thebeginningg of the movie when Jack is talking to Bootstrap when he is looking for rum. it kinda explains everything.
