The Caribbean (pronounced /ˌkærɨˈbiːən/ or /kəˈrɪbiən/; Dutch Caraïben (help·info); French: Caraïbe or more commonly Antilles; Spanish: Caribe) is a region consisting of the Caribbean Sea, its islands (most of which enclose the sea), and the surrounding coasts. The region is located southeast of the Gulf of Mexico and Northern America, east of Central America, and to the north of South America.

Situated largely on the Caribbean Plate, the region comprises more than 7,000 islands, islets, reefs, and cays. These islands, called the West Indies, generally form island arcs that delineate the eastern and northern edges of the Caribbean Sea. These islands are called the West Indies because when Christopher Columbus landed here in 1492 he believed that he had reached the Indies (in Asia).

The region consists of the Antilles, divided into the larger Greater Antilles which bound the sea on the north and the Lesser Antilles on the south and east (including the Leeward Antilles), and the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands, which are in fact in the Atlantic Ocean north of Cuba, not in the Caribbean Sea.

Geopolitically, the West Indies are usually reckoned as a subregion of North America and are organised into 27 territories including sovereign states, overseas departments, and dependencies. At one time, there was a short-lived country called the Federation of the West Indies composed of ten English-speaking Caribbean territories, all of which were then UK dependencies.

The region takes its name from that of the Carib, an ethnic group present in the Lesser Antilles and parts of adjacent South America at the time of European contact. In the English-speaking world, someone from the Caribbean is usually referred to as a "West Indian," although the phrase "Caribbean person" is sometimes used.

What Caribbean country is best to visit late June?
Q. My boyfriend and I would like to travel to one of the Caribbean countries this summer, but have no idea which country to start with. We're looking for a place that is fun for young couples, safe, cheap and not too many kids. We were thinking about: Turk and Caicos Trinidad and Tobago Barbados Bermuda Cayman Islands Curacao Any suggestions? Thank you!

A. Barbados without a doubt. It's basically out of the hurricane belt (rarely gets affected) and where safety is concerned, it's one I go to without any problems. It has low crime rate compared to Trinidad & Tobago I have been to as it's very high over there.

A. Ahh, I love those movies. Mainly, I loved the first one, but I also loved the third one with all the drama. Still, the original one would be the best in my opinion. The second one was a winner too, but I loved the scene with all the Captain Jack Sparrows on that ship in Davey Jones' Locker. :) Ahhh, just so bizarre. They're great movies. On --> The first movie got 8.0 out of 10. The second movie got 7.3 out of 10. The third movie got 7.0 out of 10. I think the first was everyone's favorite. And good news, pirate fans! POTC4 is coming... soon... ish?... As in, 2012. Ugggh, why so long?? Well, it's cool you're a fan! Yay pirates! I hope the new one will be good!! :D

What kind of boats are generally used for snorkeling trips in the Caribbean?
Q. You know when you are on vacation in the Caribbean and different companies offer snorkeling trips? What types of boats are generally used to take people out on these trips? Are there public companies that run these businesses or are they small private companies that own just one boat?

A. They vary in size from Yacht size to small 18 footers,or Catamarans which are very fairly new in terms of boating luxury even though the techno, has been a round for some time, many of these operations are base in PR Virgin islands and a few other place were tours are offered like Cayman islands and Belize, all because of the abundance of reefs and its natural aquatic environ. Many of these { boating } businesses are privately owned and operated if not by one person are a group of individuals in in the tourist trade through third parties who act behalf of a particular hotel chain. None to my knowledge are indeed publicly owned either by stock exchange are Gov. Even Cruise ships offer tours as for them am not sure if they are owned by share… [cont.]
